Show Me a Miracle…

In the early 2000s, CBS produced a television show called Joan of Arcadia.  Lasting two seasons, the show depicted a teenager, Joan (played by Amber Tamblyn), who regularly encountered God.  God would often show up as different people and converse with Joan, giving her “missions” to complete that helped people in her neighborhood or school.  In the first episode, Joan, doubting that she is actually talking to God (this time, being portrayed by a teenaged boy), asks God to show her a miracle.  God points to a tree, which causes Joan to say sarcastically, “It’s a tree.”  God replies, “Let’s see you make one!”

          So much of what we see or experience in our lives are things we often consider to be ordinary.  We often take ordinary things for granted.  Nature is one of these things, but so are family, friendships, and other relationships with people, pets, co-workers, or fellow church-goers.  When we take communion on the first Sunday of the month, we consume ordinary elements of bread and juice.  Let us remember, however, that God is able to take “ordinary” things in our lives and make them extraordinary!  Like Joan with the tree, we sometimes fail to see the extraordinary in the people we know and in our surroundings.

          I invite you to consider how God has made the ordinary time and events in your life extraordinary and perhaps even holy.  Let us seek to recognize God all around us and in our relationships with others.  Let us be thankful to God for the transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary!
