Contemporary Worship

Glen Burnie United Methodist Church offers the Heart of Worship contemporary service every Sunday morning at 9:45 in the church social hall located below the Sunday school and nursery. The service is lead by our praise leader, Ms. Kelly Porter and our praise band.

Nursery care is provided during this service as well as our Sunday school program allowing parents to attend the worship service while their children attend Sunday school.

This service is typically one hour long and less formal that the traditional service. This is a true come as you are service. We even serve light refreshments after the service!

Do you dislike the idea of coming to church because of hymns, organ music and language like “thee, thou, and thine”? We understand! Come and try out Glen Burnie's idea of a contemporary worship service.

We recently celebrated the 3 year anniversary of the Heart of Worship service. The service was named the "Heart of Worship" by a group of church members with a strong desire to step away from what has become the expected traditional worship setting and get back to the basics. Come as you are and worship your Lord as you are called to do so.

The basis for this service is Psalms 100:1&2 (New American Standard Version) “Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth. Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.” The blueprint for worship is to - shout, serve and sing. God asks just three simple things of us to have complete communion with Him:

  • Shout joyfully to Him – let the world know where you stand, that you stand with Him.
  • Serve Him with gladness – he has given us a very hard task of bringing His message to the world.  We will not always be accepted for our beliefs, but we should be ready for the tasks.
  • Come before him with joyful singing – no one said that it had to be perfect, to the LORD any music is beautiful.

We are His creation, His children – He just wants the opportunity to hear us (that is what we were created for).

Note from our worship leader: I hate the word “Contemporary”, it can become a very broad term if you let it. Really, what is your definition of “Contemporary Christian Music”?  For some it could be grunge, for others it could be a form of Rap, and yet for others it could be Heavy Metal. What is your definition of a “Contemporary Church Service”?  Again, this term is defined by the individual, not a society. To me our service is a “Worship” service, worshiping the one true God by placing Him first in the service. Placing Him above our needs, placing Him above our problems, placing Him above our successes, placing Him above our fears. Focusing completely on Him and not worrying about what our neighbor thinks. I invite you to join us at 9:45am in our social hall on Sunday morning to worship together.

Not what you're looking for? We also offer traditional services in our church sanctuary at 8:30 and 11:00.
